human experience is BOTH creative and automatic. under the boundaries and constraints of the human manifestation/ human expeerience, we are operating as both creators and puppets. it is a fine-grain, multi-dimenional balance of conscious creation and passive surrender to habit. to create does not just mean to make art. creation is anything we do consciously, any conscious decision we make [*keep in mind, that which is “concious” is not necessarily a simple black/ white distinction]. deciding to go to the grocery store incorporates a degree of creativity. choosing what you buy involves perhaps a bit more creativity. but this end of the creative spectrum is far from a fine painting or complex work of architecture. at this end of the balance creativity is minimal and automatic. one’s creative decision making here is in fact largely the duty of habit. it is not entirely habitual, but we generally need not plumb the depths of the imagination to pick out what type of cereal to buy. conversley, in painting a beautiful picture, though highly immersed in imagination and concious creation, aspects of this act are still the result of automatic habit one’s being has been programmed for. the way we move the brush or understand how colours mix, etc. – much of this is automatic – we trust it. and we can be grateful for such programming. we dont have to think about all of it.. it is great to have BOTH.
